Sr. Data Scientist

Our mission is to understand what we’re doing on, and to, Earth. We do this through our cloud-based SaaS platform, Orbital Insight GO, pulling in multiple sources of raw data from the world’s sensors – including millions of daily satellite images and connected device pings – combined with proprietary AI to analyze economic, social, and environmental trends at scale. By making the Earth “searchable” our customers have been able to illuminate supply chains, track global commodities, monitor illegal deforestation, and further national security. We are building the best data science team in the world to innovate, implement, deploy, and support these capabilities.

As Data Scientists, we are data detectives and our job is difficult because although we have “Big Data,” we exist in a persistent state of spatio-temporal data starvation. The work is fast-paced, highly iterative, and continuously trading off between what works and what’s best. In this role, your work will focus on innovative research and development of state-of-the-art algorithms/capabilities that serve our customers’ use cases. If you enjoy working with data to build products and solve hard problems in creative ways, you will fit right in.

In order to support the continued growth of the business we are looking to hire a Data Scientist to join our team. This Data Scientist will work on core research projects that advance the state of the art in geospatial capabilities that serve our customers’ use cases. This role will involve developing Data Science techniques to extract value from various types of geospatial data, improving existing Data Science models to reach higher and higher performance metrics, and collaborating with other Engineers to deploy these models in multiple cloud environments. This role will be heavily focused on R&D to enhance our platform, GO, with new and improved AI-powered capabilities.

This position will be based in our Palo Alto, CA office. Currently, Orbital Insight is fully remote (working from home) until the end of the year, due to COVID.

  • Execute against initiatives on our Data Science R&D roadmap, including investigations of new models, architectures, and paradigms for advancing the state of the art in Data Science techniques for geospatial data
  • Develop new models and techniques to improve our core capabilities; interact directly with customers and incorporate feedback into our products
  • Communicate and publish research findings in a variety of media, including internal presentations, blog posts, patents, and papers
  • Report on research and other deliverables to key stakeholders across the Engineering and Product Management teams
  • Collaborate with other Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers to incorporate new techniques and models into our GO PlatformDesign and implement methodologies and metrics for measuring and monitoring performance and active learning workflows to continuously improve our capabilities
  • Write proposals for new ideas in Data Science research that align with our company’s long-term roadmap
  • Qualifications

  • US Citizen required (eligible for US Gov. clearance)
  • Must have designed, trained, and deployed Data Science models in production (industry experience required)
  • Masters degree in a STEM field (e.g., statistics, machine learning, computer science, physics, engineering); PhD preferred
  • 3+ years of demonstrable experience working with large and noisy geospatial datasets, and particular experience with datasets that have nevertheless have sparsity in some dimension (e.g., spatially, temporally) would be a big plus
  • An ability to communicate complex data science concepts and results in a readily-understood manner to a wide audience
  • Excellent coding skills (python with a solid familiarity with NumPy, SciPy, pandas strongly preferred)
  • Expertise in machine learning, statistical modeling, and experiment design. A strong publication record in these areas is a huge plus.
  • Experience with git, GitHub, AWS (S3, EC2, etc.), Docker, Spark/Hadoop is a plus
